A pool skimmer is a device built into the side of a swimming pool that is used to remove debris from the water. The skimmer is connected to the pool’s pump and filter system and works by drawing water and debris from the pool through a small opening in the skimmer basket. As the water enters the skimmer, it passes through a filter basket that traps larger debris such as leaves and twigs. The water then flows through the plumbing system and into the pool’s filtration system where it is further cleaned before being returned to the pool through the return jets.

The skimmer basket must be emptied regularly to prevent debris from clogging the plumbing system and potentially damaging the pump or filter. In addition to the skimmer, some pools also have a secondary device called a “pool sweep” or “automatic pool cleaner” that is designed to move around the pool and collect smaller debris that may not be caught by the skimmer. Proper maintenance of both the skimmer and pool sweep can help keep your pool clean and clear.
